How Much Does It Cost to Replace a Small Diamond in a Ring?

If a small diamond has fallen out of your ring, one of the first questions that would come to your mind is probably going to be

how much it is going to cost to replace it.

The truth is that the price can vary significantly depending on various factors.

While the price of the new small diamond is probably going to be a considerable part of the final bill, it is not the only thing you need to take into consideration.

Namely, it is essential to determine what caused the incident and if any other repairs are necessary.

Two rings can easily have one missing diamond, but the required labor can differ tremendously.

What Determines the Cost of Replacing a Small Diamond?

The main factors are:

The size of the missing diamond

The shape and type of diamond that you need

The quality and appearance needed to match the existing stones

The type of setting

Whether the setting is damaged

Whether claws or the surrounding metal need rebuilding

Whether any neighbouring stones are also loose

The metal the ring is made from

This is why it is difficult to give

an accurate small diamond replacement cost without seeing the ring first.

The Diamond Isn't Always the Expensive Part

This can surprise some customers.

When you're talking about a very small diamond, the stone is often not the main element in the job.

It's the skill that goes into repairing the setting and fitting in the replacement that can be a significant factor.

For instance, if a small diamond has fallen out due to the vanishingly small bits of metal that hold it in place wearing away,

we can't just find another diamond, slot it into the gap and hope for the best.

We'll need to repair the setting first, which can entail an extraordinary amount of very delicate work using precision tools.

Why Did the Diamond Fall Out?

This is the question we would need to look into before providing you with an accurate repair quotation based on your current situation. The reasons for loss of a diamond could be:

  • A worn claw
  • Broken claw
  • Damage to a grain or pavé setting
  • Wear to one or both rings
  • A knock or impact
  • General wear over a period of time

Depending on your findings, we would be able to advise what repair (if any) would be necessary prior to fitting the replacement.

Can You Give Me a Price From a Photograph?

A clear photograph can indeed help us to understand a situation.

But with smaller diamond settings it can be incredibly hard to see the wear without actually inspecting the ring.

We would need to check:

  • how much metal remains within the setting
  • whether the neighbouring diamonds are secure
  • whether the claws have worn thin
  • whether the ring has been previously repaired
  • whether multiple areas need to be inspected

We could give you an accurate quote based on the condition of the ring rather than a general price which may change when the ring reaches the workshop.

For a more general overview of the reasons why stones can be missing and ring repair, please read the following:

What Makes One Small Diamond Replacement More Expensive Than Another?

Two rings can both be missing a miniscule diamond, but the cost to repair can be substantially different.

This is because we are not just pricing the replacement of a missing stone, but also the condition and material of the setting and the surrounding jewellery.

1. The Size of the Replacement Diamond

Even with small diamonds, size matters!

We will need to determine the correct dimensions of the empty space and see how it relates to the other stones surrounding it.

The stone that is replacing the damaged or lost one needs to fit just right and not just be the closest size available.

If the damaged diamond is in a row of diamonds you may also want to see that the new diamond will match up to the other diamonds around it too.

2. How Closely the Diamond Needs to Match

If one of the diamonds from a cluster or diamond-set shoulder goes missing, you want to be sure that the new stone you put in its place won't draw attention to itself by being different to the others. We can help you choose a diamond that will match the others in your ring by looking at characteristics such as:

  • Size
  • Shape
  • Colour
  • Clarity
  • Cut
  • And overall appearance

We'll aim to find a stone that looks natural when placed amongst the other diamonds in your ring.

3. The Type of Setting

Not all small diamonds are held in the same way.

Your missing stone could have been:

  • Claw set
  • Grain set
  • Pavé set
  • Channel set
  • Flush set

Each type of setting will need a different approach to repairing them. Some repairs may only require a relatively localised repair. However, others may require rebuilding small sections of precious metal before a replacement diamond can be safely secured.

4. How Worn the Setting Is

This might significantly affect the repair.

If the stone is lost in an isolated incident, but the rest of the setting looks to be in fine condition, then the work involved would be minimal.

However, if the ring has been worn every day, for 20 or 30 years, there might be substantially more going on.

The loss of a stone could uncover:

  • Very skinny claws
  • Worn grain settings
  • Loose stones next to the lost one
  • Damage from another ring rubbing against it
  • Previous repairs that require some additional work

In that case, simply replacing the missing diamond may not be the most optimal repair.

5. Whether Other Diamonds Need Attention

Imagine your ring has ten tiny diamonds.

One has already fallen out.

When we look at the ring we see that two more are loose as their surrounding settings are also worn.

We would point this out to you.

This does not mean we will always go ahead and do repairs without talking to you about it.

But we'd rather see what the issues were before any of your diamonds fell out a few weeks or even months later.

Why a £20 Diamond Doesn't Necessarily Mean a £20 Repair

This is an important distinction.

While the value of the replacement stone may be low, the job of putting it in could be much more involved.

It must be correctly matched,

properly fitted,

and securely set,

and the job of repairing the setting (if necessary) would have to be done first.

After all, you are not buying a loose diamond--you are paying for a repair to put the ring back in wearable condition.

Hence, we would be leery of giving a price estimate based on the value or size of the missing stone.

We'd Rather Quote the Actual Job

At The Jewellery Mechanic, we'll evaluate the ring and tell you what we feel needs to be done

The options will then be explained to you in detail.

If it is a simple replacement of a small diamond, we will tell you.

If the setting requires more involved repair we will tell you.

This way, you know exactly what you are paying for before the work begins.

Can a Replacement Small Diamond Be Matched to the Others?

Yes in many cases a replacement small diamond can be matched to the diamonds in your ring very closely.

This is especially important if the missing stone is a:

  • Diamond-set shoulder
  • Eternity ring
  • Cluster ring
  • Halo
  • Pavé setting
  • Multi-stone ring

And we don't just want a diamond that fits the space, we want one that looks right with the other stones.

What Do We Look at When Matching a Small Diamond?

There are a few variables to think about. These are:

Size and dimension – the replacement needs to fit the setting right

Shape – round, princess, baguette, marquise, and other cuts need to correspond with the original.

Colour – a notably whiter or more tinted diamond could clash with the surrounding stones.

Clarity – particularly where they might be visible alongside the existing diamonds.

Cut and overall appearance – two diamonds of the same size can look very different when put together

When it comes to smaller stones, the goal is to find something that blends in with the other stones in the jewellery.

What If I Don't Know Anything About the Original Diamond?

That's completely normal.

A lot of people wouldn't know the size, colour, or clarity of every little diamond in the ring.

And if the stone is gone, then you obviously cannot bring in the missing stone for comparison.

  • Instead, we can look at
  • the empty setting,
  • the diamonds around the missing one
  • the design of the ring,
  • as well as the size needed
  • to get an idea on what to look for.

Does the Replacement Diamond Need a Certificate?

Small diamonds, as accent stones are usually not graded or certified as the bigger centre diamond would be.

So if you have a bigger diamond to replace then you may need to discuss grading and certification.

If however, you are replacing just one small diamond in a ring, the key thing is getting the size and appearance right for the existing jewellery.

What If the Existing Diamonds Are Old?

Older jewellery can actually be really interesting in terms of matching.

The diamonds could've been cut differently to many modern stones, the ring itself could be worn down with decades of character and we don't want to be making assumptions based on what we think a modern replacement stone should look like.

We need to look at the actual stones that are on your ring!

That is especially true when it comes to antique, inherited and sentimental jewellery.

Will I Be Able to See Which Diamond Was Replaced?

The goal is that it doesn't look obtrusive.

Depending on the original stones and what is available, this can vary greatly, although smart replacement choices can help tremendously.

The mounting can also play a role

If the existing metal has been compromised or worn down, this should be addressed as well so that the replacement doesn't just look good, but is also mounted securely.

Matching the Diamond Is Only One Part of the Job

Even if we have your perfect replacement diamond, it is always essential that the setting itself is secure enough to hold it.

This is why our process is not just:

Find Diamond → Set Diamond in Hole

It is more involved than that. We examine your ring, ascertain why the original stone came out, source a suitable replacement, repair any damage to the setting and finally set the new stone.

At The Jewellery Mechanic this work is carried out in-house by expert manufacturing jewellers.

Is It Worth Replacing a Small Diamond in an Older or Sentimental Ring?

In many cases, yes.

If you have lost a small diamond from an engagement ring, eternity ring or other sentimental piece, this does not mean that the ring has to be replaced.

A small missing stone can often be replaced and the setting re-finished, allowing you to continue to wear the jewellery you already love.

When it comes to sentimental jewellery however, sometimes the decision is not based on the value of the ring, but what the ring means to you.

The Ring May Be Worth Far More to You Than Its Material Value

We often see jewellery that has been worn for decades

it could be an engagement ring,

a wedding or eternity ring,

your mother's or grandmother's ring,

a ring that has been passed down through generations in your family,

or a ring that is associated with an important event in your life

you cannot simply go to the store and buy a new one in its place.

If your ring can be repaired, replacing the missing diamond may be a good option to keep wearing your old jewellery instead of a new one.

But We Need to Look at the Rest of the Ring

With an older ring the missing diamond may not be the only thing that needs restoring

If the jewellery has been worn on a daily basis for 20, 30 or even 40 years, there may be general wear on things such as:

  • Claws.
  • Settings.
  • The shank.
  • Other stone set areas.

This doesn't necessarily mean that the ring needs a full restoration, but it is important to know the overall condition before deciding on how much work is required.

Sometimes a Bigger Repair Makes More Sense

Imagine that one of the little diamonds has worked itself loose. But when you take a closer look at the ring you see that some other of the settings where diamonds are supposed to be held are also very fine.

We could just deal with the empty setting.

But if another diamond is likely to work loose because the surrounding metal is badly worn, I think you should be made aware of that fact.

You can then decide whether you want to

repair just what needs to be done right now,

or

go ahead and perform a more elaborate restoration as well, as the ring is anyway being worked on.

Can a Very Old Diamond Ring Still Be Repaired?

Often, yes.

Age may be a factor in determining whether or not a piece of jewellery can be repaired.

It all comes down to the state of your ring.

We've worked on jewellery that has been worn and treasured for generations.

The important thing with older pieces is to assess them carefully rather than blindly assuming the same method is suitable for every ring.

Get the Ring Assessed Before Making the Decision

If you are on the fence about whether replacement of the diamond is worth it, you don't have to decide blindly.

First have the ring assessed.

At The Jewellery Mechanic, we can check

  • the missing diamond,
  • the state of the setting,
  • the other stones,
  • general wear,
  • any previous repairs
  • what needs to be done to make the ring wearable again.

We can then talk to you about the options and costs involved before you decide whether to proceed or not. That way, particularly if it is a sentimental piece, you get the reassurance that you actually need to know what is going on, rather than just being told it needs a complete replacement off the hop.

Frequently Asked Questions About Replacing a Small Diamond

How much will it cost me to replace a small diamond in a ring?

There's no average or standard price as it depends on the size and type of diamond needed, how similar we need to match the other stones and the amount of work required to repair the setting.

The most accurate price can only be given once we've assessed your ring.

Is it cheap to replace a tiny diamond in a ring?

It could well be, just remember you're not only paying for the diamond that's loose, but potentially the setting too before we can fit the new one.

With smaller diamonds the repair can sometimes be intricate work using special magnification.

Can I just replace a single diamond in a ring?

In most cases yes, a lost or missing diamond can often be replaced without having to replace the other stones.

We'll look for a diamond that fits correctly and matches the existing ones in your ring.

Can you match the replacement to my other diamonds?

We should be able to, by looking at the size, shape, colour, clarity, cut and general appearance of the diamonds already in your ring we'll aim to get the closest possible match so that the replacement isn't obtrusive.

What if I find the missing diamond?

Keep hold of it and bring it along with the ring, if it's not damaged and fit to be reset, rather than getting a replacement, we'll use the one you find.

We'll still need to repair whatever it was that failed so it can be re-set safely though.

How did the diamond fall out of my ring? It was tiny!

It can be surprising just how delicate a setting has to be to hold even the smallest of diamonds and common causes for a loss like this would be age, damage or impact to the setting, damage to the claws or regular wear from another ring rubbing against it.

Sometimes it can be very hard to see without magnification.

If I've lost a diamond from my ring should I stop wearing it?

Yes please, until we've examined your ring we ask that you don't wear it.

If one setting has become worn to the point of failure there's a good chance that the others will need close examination too.

 Need a Small Diamond Replaced?

If you have looked down and found that a tiny little diamond has come out of your ring, don't panic as we may be able to help!

There are a variety of things we can do to source a replacement stone and reset it within the ring with confidence.

The first step to resetting your ring is the initial assessment.

At The Jewellery Mechanic, we will be looking at:

What sort of diamond you need to replace the lost one

How similar the replacement needs to be to the rest of the stones if there are any

What caused the original diamond to come out and if the setting needs rebuilding

If the other diamonds are secure if there are any

We will then be able to advise you and tell you how much the repair will cost before beginning any work.

Don't Just Replace the Diamond — Repair the Reason It Fell Out

This is the part that we would be able to emphasize the most

If the diamond was lost due to the fact that the setting has worn away, replacing it with another diamond stone in the same worn setting will not be the right solution.

The stone and the setting must be replaced together.

Our manufacturing jeweller can perform this service as they have been repairing jewellery with over 35 years of experience. The process from assessment of the damaged setting through fitting and securing the new stone is done in house.
